The SAF Concept

The Study Abroad Foundation believes that students who study abroad increase their international understanding and develop the intercultural skills needed to succeed in and contribute to their own societies and to the world. To expand such opportunities to students across Asia, the Foundation became the first non-profit to debut the American model of study abroad in Asia and continues to facilitate qualified students' placement in study abroad programs at top Western universities.

The SAF concept is based on the value of universities working together in a multilateral network to increase opportunities for their students to study abroad. Through the SAF International University Network (IUN), the Foundation is committed to helping member universities share resources and develop the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively and professionally respond to students' increased and more specialized demand for study abroad programs.

Working in this way is relatively new to universities in Asia. As such, SAF specializes in developing and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships between premier Western and Eastern member universities. For some universities, IUN membership will be central to their internationalization and student mobility plans; for others, it will supplement well-developed and long-standing programs. Encouraging member universities to help guide the Foundation's development, SAF has established an International Advisory Council (IAC) on which each member university is represented through country chapters.

Continually seeking growth opportunities, the Foundation has proudly affiliated with  IES Abroad , a U.S.-based leader in the study abroad, visiting student field. This strategic decision, effective December 2015, serves both organizations’ students and member universities, and will considerably strengthen SAF’s development.
