Student Liaison Officer

Status: Part-time, contractual

Schedule: Approximately 120 hours per semester

Reports to: Study Abroad Foundation, Indianapolis IN, a division of IES Abroad

Direct reports: none

Start date: Immediately

Location: United Kingdom or Ireland

About us: The Study Abroad Foundation is a US non-profit education organization – a 501(c)(3) - focused on student international mobility. SAF’s HQ is in Indianapolis, Indiana, with the majority of its staff based in the Foundation’s Country Offices in China, Japan and Korea.  SAF facilitates study abroad opportunities in the US, Canada, Europe and Australasia for international students attending its member universities in Asia.  For more information about the Foundation please visit our web site at www.studyabroadfoundation.org.

Summary of position: The Student Liaison Officer (SLO) will aid the Chinese, Japanese and Korean University Students (Students) attending Universities in the UK and Ireland. The SLO will communicate through email, phone and campus meetings with SAF participants; Provide student support and pastoral care particularly in regard to student concerns including their housing (residence hall or homestay); academics and personal issues; Work closely with staff located at the SAF Headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana USA (SAF HQ) in regard to student concerns; assist SAF HQ and participants in case of emergency and; manage local budget.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Interact with the Students
  • Help the Students to understand their environment
  • Intervene with any issues that may arise between the Students and others
  • Be available to the Students in case of an emergency
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position
  • Host student activities in London, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester and other UK or Irish cities as student enrollment demands
  • Any other task or duty as assigned or required

Experience & Qualifications/Skills:

  • Minimum of two years of relatable experience, including the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fluid organizational environment
  • Experience working with international students preferred
  • Japanese language proficiency preferred but not required

OTHER SKILLS REQUIRED The ideal candidate will have studied or lived abroad and be empathetic to the challenges of adjusting to a new culture and language.

Education Licenses and/or Certifications etc.: Current university student or some college

LICENSE / CERTIFICATION REQUIRED – Must be legally authorized to work in the UK.

Physical Demands: Must be able to communicate via phone, email and in-person with Students and SAF staff for the majority of the day (between 75% - 100% of work time). Must be willing to travel across the UK and Ireland, executing all travel arrangements and available to work on weekends.

Working conditions/Environment: The SLO may be required to work outside regular office hours as defined by the needs of the Students and SAF. Must be available to work approximately 120 hours per semester and have the flexibility to work additional hours if necessary (when and as needed).

Fiscal responsibilities: Responsible for following SAF and IES Abroad policies regarding any purchases and/or travel, if required, made via company credit card as well as processing expense reports in a time and accurate manner.
