Michigan State University (MSU) is known around the region as one of the best universities the Midwest has to offer. MSU was ranked No. 27 of 100 of the Best Global Universities and is noted as one of the top Big Ten universities for its international student enrollment and study abroad participation. MSU’s unique approach to academics endorses a global and friendly campus community; making the transition easy for SAF scholars to fully integrate into university life. At MSU, having the American experience means that SAF Scholars have access to hundreds of classes and academic facilities all alongside American students.

Recognized not only for its educational achievements and athletic accomplishments, MSU is also located in the beautifully scenic state of Michigan. Michigan is famously known as the “great lake state” and contains the largest connected area of fresh water on Earth. It has 3,000 miles of coast line – more than California!

Centrally located in East Lansing, MSU is a short distance to some of the most unique outdoor opportunities such as hiking, fishing, snowmobiling and camping. SAF Scholars who not only have an interest in rigoruous course work, but who are eager to discover the out doors will most definitely enjoy exploring the beaches and national parks Michigan has to offer.

SAF Scholars in search of having a traditional American college experience while maintaining a good balance between their academic and social life would find MSU to be a great fit. SAF Scholars who attend MSU tend to be flexible in their academic studies and are encouraged to have a broad selection of courses.

Progression or Concurrent Notes

Progression: There are no progression options at MSU.
Concurrent: Concurrent enrollment is an informal option for academically admissible students who would like to take a combination of ESL and academic courses. SAF Scholars will work directly with an academic advisor to determine which courses will be most useful. Students must meet the overall minimum English language proficiency of the academic program at MSU.

The academic program at MSU offers various resources and activities are organized for students each semester, including personalized course advising to group events on the weekends

Full-time graduate - 9 units

Course Registration Policies & Procedures

Advisors from the different schools/colleges at the university will assist in registering students in classes based on their course selection form prior and upon arrival. Most students will still be making a few adjustments to their schedules after arriving on campus and during the first week of courses.

Course/Departmental Restrictions

Some courses and departments have limited access. Therefore, SAF Scholars cannot enroll in the following courses prior to their arrival. However, if they choose, they can attend the course on their first day and check if there are any open seats and then obtain permission from the professor.

  • All School of Engineering Courses
The following courses are impacted and are given priority to degree-seeking majors:
  • All School of Business Courses
  • Bioinformatics
  • Biotechnology
  • Genetics

Graduate Courses

Yes, however, prerequisite requirements must be met for graduate courses. MSU advisors will work with SAF Scholars.

SAF Scholars are automatically enrolled in a meal plan with their housing placement. Each meal plan is based on the residence hall that the student is assigned to. Meal plans are included in the room and board fee.

Co-/Extra-Curricular Opportunities or Programs

Networking and making new friends is important to the study abroad experience at MSU. SAF Scholars interested in meeting American students have access to over 600 clubs and organizations; making it simple for SAF scholars to participate and connect with other students the minute they arrive to campus.

Life on Campus

MSU is an active, social, and globally aware campus. Students are friendly and like to participate in intramural sport teams, student organizations and university athletic events such as football, hockey and basketball. Even when stepping off campus, MSU is surrounded by a variety of local stores, pubs and coffee shops that make this quaint college town a cozy and relaxed atmosphere.
