The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), is the largest and arguably the most iconic of the 10 campuses in the UC System, and its renowned for its top-ranked programs in various fields of study.

The distinguished professors and faculty include Nobel Prize winners, Guggenheim Fellows, members of the National Academy of Sciences, and other prestigious academic organizations. UCLA is also known for its libraries, award-winning athletic teams, performing arts and cultural offerings.

UCLA Extension accounts for 40,000 participants every year, and is said to be the largest single-campus continuing education program in the world. Although Extension does not offer degree programs, it does offer a wide variety of university-level, credit-bearing courses as well as many other courses and programs for SAF Scholars.

The Student body at UCLA includes nearly 3,000 international students each year, who are seeking course credits and knowledge in fields such as engineering, computer science, business management, health sciences and teacher education.

UCLA is located in Westwood Village, one of the safest and most attractive neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Westwood Village is a short bus ride away from Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and the beach. The neighborhood features theaters, shops, markets, museums and a variety of restaurants.

This program is the right-fit for SAF Scholars who want to advance their academic study and enhance their resume through undertaking a challenging course of study at a top-ranked American university. SAF Scholars who enjoy a sunny climate year-round will feel at home in Los Angeles. The city is a hub for many industries, such as film and entertainment, and is famous for its museums, concert venues, beaches, mountains and deserts.

Progression or Concurrent Notes

There are currently no Progression or Concurrent options available at UCLA. Students enroll in a standalone Academic Program.

Program Strengths

This program offers a wide variety of courses in fields of study that include business, computer programming, engineering, project management and many more. Most of the program courses are taught by experienced professionals who place a strong emphasis on practical application. This provides SAF Scholars with the knowledge and skills they can use in their later careers.

A minimum of 12 units is necessary for full-time status at UCLA.

Course Registration Policies & Procedures

University of California schools, including UCLA, participate in a course registration process called ‘course crashing.’ Scholars will attend a class at the regularly scheduled time and will need to gain permission from the professor in order to enroll in the class.

Course/Departmental Restrictions

The following courses are impacted and are given priority to degree-seeking majors:
  • Mathematics
  • Statistics

The only engineering courses available to SAF Scholars are the ones available through the UCLA Extension School. Students may not enroll in engineering classes outside of the extension school.

Housing Type

During the Academic Year, SAF Scholars will be housed in on-campus apartments. During the summer, SAF Scholars will reside in on-campus dormitories.


Meals in the on-campus apartments are self-catered. Students will have access to kitchens and may cook their own meals. If a student wishes to purchase a meal plan, they may do so at their own expense. Students may choose between plans that contain 11, 15, or 21 meals per week. Meals can be purchased at a student’s discretion during specific times throughout the day.

Meal plans in the university residence halls vary. Some residence halls, such as Zuma, have no meal plan associated with the hall. Other housing options, such as AEPhi, have an included meal plan. Students may purchase or upgrade meal plans. Their choices are 11, 15, or 21 meals per week.

Co-/Extra-Curricular Opportunities or Programs

SAF Scholars have the privilege of enjoying all of the clubs, organizations and facilities that are available to domestic students. There is always something exciting to do by joining one or more of the 800 clubs and organizations on campus. During free time, students can meet new friends by helping out at the campus volunteer center, participating in community programs and joining activities at the Dashew Center for International Students and Scholars.

Life on Campus

UCLA is situated on a 419-acre picturesque, park-like campus that includes 174 buildings in a variety of architectural styles, as well as museums, sculpture gardens, fountains and green spaces.
