The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), is the largest and arguably the most iconic of the 10 campuses in the UC System, and its renowned for its top-ranked programs in various fields of study.

The distinguished professors and faculty include Nobel Prize winners, Guggenheim Fellows, members of the National Academy of Sciences, and other prestigious academic organizations. UCLA is also known for its libraries, award-winning athletic teams, performing arts and cultural offerings.

The student body at UCLA counts nearly 3,000 international students among its members, so SAF Scholars who participate in this program can expect to meet students from their home countries as well as from around the world. SAF Scholars who are seeking course credits and knowledge in fields such as Engineering, Computer Science, Business Management, Health Sciences and Teacher Education are also encouraged to apply.

UCLA is located in Westwood Village, one of the safest and most attractive neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Westwood Village is a short bus ride away from Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and the beach. The neighborhood features theaters, shops, markets, museums and a variety of restaurants.

Student Profile

The Academic Intensive English Program (AIEP) would be a good-fit for SAF Scholars who are seeking to enroll in a US Language program that will:
  • Prepare them for academic program studies in an American University setting
  • Offer a full-time English course program
  • Enhance their skills in reading, vocabulary, writing, listening, speaking and grammar
  • Prepare them for IELTS or TOEFL tests
  • Allow them to study alongside other international students in one of the best known neighborhoods in Los Angeles; Westwood Village

Program Strengths

Most ALC instructors have master’s degrees in Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Since many of them have lived and worked in other countries, they understand the challenges that ALC participants experience as they adapt to the language and life in the United States.

Progression or Concurrent Notes

There are currently no progression or concurrent language options available at UCLA. Students may only enroll in standalone language programs.

Off-campus apartments


All students in on-campus apartments have access to kitchens and are responsible for their own meals. If desired, students may purchase meal plans containing 11, 15, or 21 meals per week.

Co-/Extra-Curricular Opportunities or Programs

SAF Scholars have the privilege of enjoying all of the clubs, organizations and facilities that are available to domestic students. There is always something exciting to do by joining one or more of the 800 clubs and organizations on campus. During free time, students can meet new friends by helping out at the campus volunteer center, participating in community programs and joining activities at theDashew Center for International Students and Scholars.

Life on Campus

UCLA is situated on a 419-acre picturesque, park-like campus that includes 174 buildings in a variety of architectural styles, as well as museums, sculpture gardens, fountains and green spaces.
