The University of Limerick (UL) is a young and vibrant institution for higher education. Located in Ireland’s third largest city and by the banks of the River Shannon, UL offers an internationally-focused education to all who attend classes.

Located just outside of the downtown area, the campus has a picturesque view of the green countryside. Beyond enjoying the scenery, the students often enjoy the amenities that come with the university. Sport is deeply connected to life at UL. The athletic facilities include the University Arena, the national 50-metre swimming pool, a suspended jogging track, and over 36 club sports.

SAF Scholars who study English language at the University of Limerick will have the opportunity not only to take courses at the UL Language Centre, but to study at the Language Learning Hub which contains an area for self-study outside of class time, two computer labs and a digital language lab – all equipped with specialist software, student stations and dedicated to UL Language students.

Limerick is Ireland’s third largest city and is situated on the west coast along the banks of the River Shannon. The city offers a unique blend of old and new, with the 800-year-old King John’s Castle standing alongside modern buildings that make up the landscape of downtown. Thomond Park Stadium in Limerick is home to the Munster Ruby team, one of the top Rugby teams in Europe. The stadium also holds major concerts, which have included Elton John and Bruce Springsteen.

Student Profile

SAF Scholars seeking opportunities for a supportive language learning experience in a vibrant but smaller city would be well-suited to attend UL. The right-fit student enjoys both city and country life experiences, as the location of UL affords quick access to both.

Co-/Extra-Curricular Opportunities or Programs

SAF Scholars who attend English language classes have the same access to UL facilities as all other students. The university library, extra-curricular organizations, athletic facilities, and campus life are all available to students who want to become more involved at UL. Rugby is one of the most popular sports at UL and in Limerick. For those interested in trying it themselves, there are several clubs available.

Life on Campus

Students at UL partake in the many activities that occur on campus as well as the offerings of events that exist in and around the area. There are multiple bus stops throughout campus. These routes give the students easy access to both the surrounding area and other cities in Ireland.

As the university is in a residential part of the city, it is not uncommon to see students and residents walking around campus and enjoying some of the many perks of the facilities. The on-campus University Concert Hall is a popular location for permanence and entertainment events. It has hosted everything from local communication organizations, such as the Limerick Choral Union, to world famous artists, such as Johnny Cash and Van Morrison.
