University of Montana

Located in picturesque Missoula, Montana, the University of Montana (UM) provides students with a beautiful atmosphere to live and study.

Missoula is the second largest city in Montana, with a population of about 80,000 people. Locals and students alike live an outdoorsy lifestyle, as Missoula has more than 500 acres of parkland, 26 miles of trails, 3,300 acres of conservation lands, and 20,000 trees.

The scenic university campus spans more than 56 acres and encompasses 60 unique buildings. With a student population of more than 13,000, the University of Montana comes alive with large American college sporting events, social clubs and student-run events.

For Language learners, UM’s Office for Student Success provides a wide range of resources that SAF Scholars would benefit from, such as the Writing and Public Speaking Center and unique subject-based study sessions.

Progression or Concurrent Notes

If a student achieves the academic English proficiency minimum during their study, the student will be fully admitted to the university. Students are also eligible for full admission to the university if they receive a recommendation from ELI based on good grades in ELI’s advanced class, Level 6. Students attending ELI classes will be recommended for admission to UM if they:
  1. Achieve a minimum GPA of 3.5 or 90% in Level 6
  2. Achieve a minimum GPA of 3.0 or 85% in Level 6 AND have a documented TOEFL score of 500 (ITP) or 61 (iBT) or IELTS 5.5 (with no band lower than a 5.0).

Co-/Extra-Curricular Opportunities or Programs

The University of Montana offers the Outdoor Recreation Club. Here, SAF Scholars could venture beyond the classroom to learn or advance their skills in many sports, from rock climbing and kayaking to cross-country skiing. Through this club, SAF Scholars would have the opportunity to backpack with peers through Glacier National park and canoe the Green River, too. Students need not worry about packing their gear, either. The club rents equipment for everything from water sports to camping to climbing to biking and more

Life on Campus

University of Montana is known for its neighborly vibe. With on-campus housing secured for SAF Scholars, they are able to take full advantage of the campus resources, from dining to fitness to recreational facilitates.
