Neighborhood: Urban, cosmopolitan
Housing: On-campus

The Korean Language Institute (KLI) was established on April 1, 1959 as the first institute to provide intensive Korean language courses. KLI not only has been offering an education in Korean culture, but has also played a role introducing Korean culture and history through its language training to students, missionaries and diplomats. KLI is a “SKY” university, making it one of the most prestigious in the country.

All teachers are experienced and specially trained to teach Korean to non-native speakers. The attentive KLI staff continually work towards providing an enriching environment for their students. Today, the KLI has turned into a large-scale institute, where 140 instructors teach approximately 1,700 students per term. As many as 5,865 students have graduated from KLI in the past 53 years and a total of 100,044 students from 144 countries have studied Korean at KLI.

Seoul is the sixteenth largest city in the world, allowing SAF Scholars to experience one of the most modern urban environments. History is a common theme, since Seoul is also one of the oldest cities in the world. With Seoul’s sister city being Tokyo, Japan, scholars can experience at KLI the same feelings that they felt attending their large home university in cosmopolitan metropolis.

Student Profile

KLI students come from all over the world and from all walks of life. The result is a lively, international mix of students who provide a stimulating environment for learning the Korean language. This environment provides many opportunities for diverse discussions and cross-cultural exchange that promote conversation skills and make for a better understanding of each other.
